Founded in Ohio, USA in 1948, YSI develops and manufactures sensors, meters, software and data acquisition platforms for environmental and coastal water quality monitoring and testing.

Since merging with SonTek in 2001, YSI has successfully integrated the technical expertise of the two companies and has become the world's only group company that masters both water quality and flow measurement technologies. YSI Group owns two major brands, YSI and SonTek, with four main product lines: YSI water quality analyzer, YSI multi-parameter water quality monitoring system, SonTek/YSI acoustic Doppler flow rate measurement system, and YSI integrated system (formerly known as Endeco/YSI system).
In 2011, YSI was acquired by ITT Corp. into its analytics division and became part of its spin-off company Xylem.
