Generally, all kinds of water pumps are named according to their use. The name of the water pump contains information such as operation mode, scopes of application or transmission medium.

1. According to the Working Principle

1.1 Vane Pump

Vane pump can be divided into: centrifugal pump, mixed flow pump, axial flow pump and vortex pump. Centrifugal pump can be divided into single-stage pump and multi-stage pump. Mixed flow pump can be divided into volute pump and guide vane pump. Axial flow pumps can be divided into fixed blades pump and adjustable blades pump. Vortex pump can be divided into single suction pump, double suction pump, self-priming pump, non self-priming pump.

1.2 Positive Displacement Pump

Positive replacement pump can be divided into reciprocating pump and rotor pump. Positive displacement pump relies on the working elements to make reciprocating or rotary motion in the pump cylinder, so that the working volume can be increased and decreased alternately, so as to realize the suction and discharge of liquid. The positive displacement pump with reciprocating motion of working elements is called reciprocating pump, and the pump with rotary motion is called rotary pump. The suction and discharge processes of the former are alternately carried out in the same pump cylinder and controlled by the suction valve and discharge valve; The latter forces the liquid to transfer from the suction side to the discharge side through the rotation of working elements such as gears, screws, blade rotors or sliding blades.

1.3 Jet Pump

Jet pump is a kind of hydrodynamic pump. Without Mechanical transmission and mechanical working components, hydrodynamic pump transports low-energy liquid with the assistance of energy generated by another working fluid as a power source, and is great in safety when pumped combustible and explosive things. Jet vacuum pump is a device that uses high-speed jet through the nozzle to pump out the gas in the container to obtain vacuum, also known as jet vacuum pump. In chemical production, the aim is to produce vacuum.

2. According to the Running State

Besides working pump, there are spare pump and standby pump.
The main pump sometimes includes booster pump or feed pump and other booster pumps.

3. According to Working Mode

Full load operation pump or base load operation pump, partial load operation pump (such as half load operation pump) or low load operation pump, and peak load operation pump, auxiliary pump, starting pump and emergency pump.

4. According to the Scope of Application

Following pumps including water supply pumps, water supply pumps, deep well pumps, deep well submersible pumps, irrigation pumps, water pumps, flood control pumps and rainwater pumps are used in the fields of water supply, drainage, irrigation and sewage treatment.

The diesel engine water pump is used for the generator unit, and the boiler feed water pump (water supply pump), condensate pump, reactor pump, water storage and energy storage pump (usually used in driving pump and turbine), hot water pump and heating water circulating pump are used in the heating equipment.

Following pumps including chemical pumps, pipeline pumps, refining pumps, process pumps, pipeline pumps, loading and unloading pumps, mixing pumps and reflux pumps are used in the chemical and petrochemical field.

Following pumps including marine pump, cargo oil pump(used to unload oil in tanker), bilge pump, dock pump and waterjet propulsion(used to pump and drain water in the dock) are used in shipbuilding industry.

Other scopes of applications include mine pumps, fire pumps, booster pumps, scavenging pumps and ventilation pumps.

5. According to the Transmission Media

The most common water pump is mainly used to transport the liquid with water the major component, including pure water pump, drinking water pump, hot water pump, cooling water pump, sea water pump, sewage pump, liquid manure pump, manure pump, slurry pump, slurry pump, impurity pump, pulping pump and plant fiber pump.

The types of water pump named after other transported media are as follows: oil pump (fuel pump and lubrication oil pump), fuel pump, heat carrier transfer pump, coolant pump, liquefied gas pump, lubrication pump, acid pump, alkaline pump, beverage pump (milk pump, beer pump and wine pump), fish suction pump, beet pump, fruit pump, concrete pump (transporting liquid concrete to the construction site along the pipeline; do not confuse with concrete volute pump) and cooling water pump.
